Place slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook.

THROW

SPIRAL MOTIF

Rnd 1: With A1 (blue—see Pattern Notes) form a slip ring (see illustration on page 8), ch 1, work (sc, hdc, dc) in slip ring, pull up long lp and remove hook; sc join (see Special Stitch) B1 (ocean) just past last dc, (hdc, dc) in slip ring, pull up long lp and remove hook; sc join B2 (blue) just past last dc, (hdc, dc) in slip ring, place marker in last dc of B2 to mark end of rnd, do not remove hook, pull beg tail of A1 to close slip ring. (12 sts)

Rnd 2: Continuing with B2, work 2 dc in each of next 3 A1 sts, pull up long lp and remove hook; insert hook in A1 lp and work 2 dc in each of next 3 B1 sts, pull up a lp, remove hook and insert in B1 lp; work 2 dc in each of next 3 A2 sts, pull up a lp, remove hook and insert in A2 lp, work 2 dc in each of next 3 B2 sts, move marker to last dc worked, do not remove hook. (24 sts)

Rnd 3: Continue using A2, work [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 3 times*, pull up lp, remove hook and pick up next free lp, rep from * with each strand around to marker, ending last rep at **, move marker to last dc worked, do not remove hook. (36 sts)

Rnd 4: Continue using strand from last rnd, *[2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 sts] 2 times, hdc, sc, sl st in rem 3 sts of segment, fasten off strand. Pick up next free lp and rep from * with each strand to end, remove marker. (44 sts)

1-SIDED VERTICAL JOINING

Work spiral motif through segment 2 of rnd 4, do not fasten off, with RS facing, align last st of segment 2 with 4th st from end of same-colored segment on adjacent motif; ch 1, sl st through both motifs in each of next 4 sts, fasten off and complete last 2 segments of motif.

1-SIDED HORIZONTAL JOINING

Work spiral motif through segment 3 of rnd 4, do not fasten off, with RS facing, align last st of segment 3 with 4th st from end of same colored segment on adjacent motif; ch 1, sl st through both motifs in each of next 4 sts, fasten off, complete last segment of motif.

2-SIDED JOINING

Work spiral motif through segment 2 of rnd 4, do not fasten off, work vertical join, fasten off, complete segment 3 and work horizontal join, fasten off, complete last segment of motif, fasten off.

HALF-STAR MOTIF

With sunshine and RS facing, ch 4, join in 4th ch from hook to form ring; ch 4, sl st in 4th st of segment above location of half-star, ch 4, sl st in ring, ch 2, sk 3 unworked sts on edge of same motif, sl st in next ch, ch 2, sl st in ring, rotate piece 90 degrees; ch 4, sl st in joining between motifs, ch 4, sl st in ring, ch 2, sk 3 unworked sts on edge of adjacent motif, sl st in next ch 2, sl st in ring, rotate piece 90 degrees; ch 4, sl st in same st as last dc of segment on spiral motif below half-star, ch 4, 4 sc in ring, end with sl st in first ch of first ch-4 spoke. Fasten off.
(3 ch-4 spokes, 2 ch-2 spokes, 4 sc)

STAR MOTIF

With sunshine, ch 4, join (see Pattern Notes) in 4th ch from hook, *ch 4, with RS facing sl st in join between 2 adjacent motifs, ch 4, sl st in ring, ch 2, sk 3 unworked sts on edge of motif, sl st in next st, ch 2, sl st in ring, rotate piece 90 degrees; rep from * 3 times, end with sl st in first ch of beg ch-4 spoke, fasten off. (4 ch-4 spokes, 4 ch-2 spokes)

FINISHING

Spray lightly with water and pat motifs to shape.
