Starting the Inner Granny Square

Begin: Make Magic Circle

This classic technique allows you to close the center tightly, giving your work a neat finish.

Row 1:

  1. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), in the Magic Circle, work 2 DC.
  2. Ch 3, 3 DC – Repeat this sequence 3 times.
  3. Ch 2 and close the Magic Circle.
  4. Slp St to the top of the Ch 3. Chain 3 and turn your work.

Tip: Remember to turn every row on the inner granny for an even pattern.

Row 2:

  1. Work 2 DC in the Ch 2 space.
  2. In the next Ch 3 space, 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC.
  3. Repeat the above sequence two more times.
  4. Finish with 3 DC around the post of the SC, Ch 3, and Slp St to the top of the Ch 3. Tie off and turn.

Row 3:

  1. Change color. Slp St into any side space, Ch 3, and make 2 DC in the same space.
  2. In each corner, 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC. Continue around the square.
  3. Slp St to the top of the Ch 3, Chain 3, and turn.

Building the Outer Granny Square

Rows 4 to 7:

  1. Row 4: Work 2 DC in the same gap, 3 DC in each gap, and a corner cluster (3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC) in each Ch 3 space.
  2. Row 5: Change color, Slp St into any middle gap, Ch 3, 2 DC in the same gap, and continue with 3 DC in every gap, finishing with a corner cluster in each corner space.
  3. Row 6: Repeat the previous pattern without changing colors.
  4. Row 7: Change color, and follow the same structure as Row 5. Slp St to the top of the first Ch 3, Ch 3, and turn.

Completing the Inner Square

Rows 8 to 10:

  1. Repeat the steps of Rows 6 and 7, continuing to alternate colors for a vibrant look.
  2. At the end of Row 10, do not turn your work. Instead, finish with a slip stitch row along the front loop of each DC, adding a Ch 1 at the center of each side.

End of Inner Granny Square

Adding the Kaleidoscope Sections

You will now begin working on each side separately to build outwards.

First Side (Rows 1 to 8):

  2. In the marked Ch 1 space, create a corner set 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC.
  3. Continue connecting with slip stitches at the center.

Rows 2 to 4:

  1. For each row, follow the same corner cluster pattern with color changes.
  2. Note: Tie off at the end of each row and turn your work.

Rows 5 to 8:

  1. Change colors as you go, following the pattern.
  2. On Row 8, secure with a slip stitch and leave a 4-5” tail.

Connecting Sides

For the second, third, and fourth sections, follow the same process as the first side, making sure to connect them seamlessly.

  2. Use slip stitches to connect each row, creating a neat edge.

The Third Square and Final Rows

  2. For the last 6 rows (Rows 15 to 20), continue the same color changes as in the inner granny square.

Outside Edge: Barred Single Crochet

To finish, use a Barred Single Crochet for a unique, two-sided edge:

  • Barred SC: Drag the yarn forward, insert the hook into the top of the next DC, grab the feed yarn, and pull through. YO and complete the SC.
