Shell Stitch Crochet Pattern

The shell stitch is one of the most beloved and versatile crochet patterns, known for its elegant and textured design. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn a new technique or an experienced crocheter seeking a timeless pattern, the shell stitch is an excellent choice.

The shell stitch creates a fan-like or scalloped design, adding both texture and visual appeal to your crochet projects. This stitch is widely used for blankets, scarves, shawls, and even clothing due to its beautiful drape and structure.

Foundation Row:
Start with a foundation chain using multiples of 8.
Example: For a baby blanket, you can chain to dimensions like 93×97 cm or 100×100 cm.
Add 2 extra chains at the end for turning.

Row 1:
Begin in the 2nd chain from the hook and make a single crochet (SC).
Yarn over, skip the next 3 chains, and in the 4th chain make 7 double crochets (DC).
Without chaining, skip the next 3 chains and make an SC in the 4th chain.
Repeat * to the end of the row.
Finish the row with an SC.

Row 2:
Attach a new color. Chain 4 and turn.
Make a DC in the first SC of the previous row.
Chain 2, skip 3 DCs, and make an SC in the next DC.
Chain 2, and in the center of the space between two patterns, make:
1 AD, chain 2,

1 DC (to create a cross-space for the next row).
Chain 2 and repeat * to the end of the row.
At the end, make 1 DC in the last SC, chain 1, and another DC in the same space to form a small corner space.

Row 3:
Chain 3 and turn.
Make 3 DCs into the first corner space (counts as a half-pattern).
SC in the top of the SC from the previous row.
In the cross-space created in the previous row, make 7 DCs (a full pattern).
SC in the next SC.

SC in the first SC.
*Chain 2, skip 3 DCs, and in the center of the cross-space:

chain 2,

1 DC (creating the cross-space).*
Chain 2 and repeat to the end.
Finish with SC in the last SC.

Row 5 (Repeat of Row 3):
Chain 3 and turn.

The pattern alternates between full patterns and half patterns along the edges.
