Granny squares are a timeless crochet classic, but what if we gave them a festive twist? Introducing the Granny Square Tree Motif—a delightful pattern perfect for the holiday season. Whether you’re crafting blankets, table runners, or decorative pillow covers, this charming design will add a touch of Christmas cheer to your projects.
The Granny Square Tree Motif combines the simplicity of traditional granny squares with a playful tree design, making it suitable for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike. The vibrant green of the tree, paired with white and red accents, captures the essence of the season.
I used size 3 cotton yarn and a 2mm crochet hook. That’s all the material needed. You can also use any yarn you have at home. These squares can be used for blankets, sweaters, or gloves (I’ve already done tutorials for those). You can create many things with them.
We’ll begin with green yarn in the center. But first, notice there are two different squares: one with a smaller tree (with two “points”) and one with a larger tree (with three “points”). Depending on your project, both versions can be cute.
Step-by-Step Instructions
First Round:
Start with a magic ring. Wrap the yarn around your finger to create a small ring. Pull the yarn through and secure it with two chains.
Work inside the ring: create four groups of three double crochets, separated by two chains. The three chains at the beginning count as one double crochet.
After completing the four groups, close the round with a slip stitch in the third chain of the initial chain set. Pull the tail of the magic ring to close the center tightly.
Second Round (Still in Green):
Chain three, work two double crochets into the chain space to form half of the first corner.
In the next chain space, work three double crochets, two chains, and three double crochets to form a full corner. Repeat this for all corners.
Finish the round by completing the last corner, chaining two, and closing with a slip stitch in the third chain of the initial chain set.
Adding White Yarn:
Don’t close the last stitch of the green round. Instead, attach the white yarn and close the stitch with it.
Work the next corner in white: chain three, two double crochets, and form a full corner with three double crochets, two chains, and three double crochets.
Alternating Colors for the Tree:
Carry the unused yarn along the back of the work as you alternate green and white to avoid cutting and reattaching repeatedly.
Form the tree shape by using green for the tree and white for the background.
Tips and Final Touches
Remember to always make two chains in the corners. If you forget, the square will become uneven. It’s better to unravel a single round than to redo the entire square.
After completing the rounds in green and white, add a red round to complete the Christmas theme.
For the larger tree, follow the same steps but add an extra green round to increase the size. Alternate the yarn colors to keep the tree’s shape intact. After finishing the granny square, weave in the ends and use it for your desired project.
The tutorial is now complete! For any questions or to share your creations. Happy crocheting! 🎄
