Crochet Baby Dress & Headband Pattern

Gauge

16 dc = 4”; 8 yoke dc rows = 4” using smaller hook
Check your gauge! Adjust hook size as needed to match gauge.

Notes

The dress is worked from the top down.
The yoke is worked back and forth in rows, from the neck down to underarm. Stitches are skipped to form armholes, and the skirt is then worked in rounds down to the lower edge.

Special Stitches

V-st (V-stitch): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch.
lg-V-st (Large V-stitch): (Dc, ch 2, dc) in indicated stitch.
Shell: (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in indicated stitch.
Picot: Ch 2, slip st in last stitch made.
3-dc Cl (3 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in stitch indicated and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook), [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 2 loops on hook] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
5-dc Cl (5 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in stitch indicated and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook), [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.

Yoke

With smaller hook, ch 50 (50, 58, 58).
Row 1 (Right Side): 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning chains count as dc), *dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch; repeat from *across, turn—72 (72, 84, 84) dc.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in first st (increase made), [dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st] 11 (11, 13, 13) times, dc in next 4 sts, dc in last dc (top of turning ch), turn—84 (84, 98, 98) dc.

For Sizes 6 (12) months:

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 8 sts, 2 dc in next st] 9 times, dc in last 2 sts, turn—94 (94) sts. 5.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 12 sts, 2 dc in next st] 7 times, dc in last 2 sts, turn—102 (102) sts. 6.
Row 5: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 20 sts, 2 dc in next st] 4 times, dc in next 16 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn—108 (108) sts. 7.
Row 6: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 20 sts, 2 dc in next st] 5 times, dc in last 2 sts, turn—114 (114) sts.

For Size 12 months:

Row 7: Ch 3, dc in first st, dc in next 12 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 12 sts] 7 times, dc in last 10 sts, turn—122 sts.

For Sizes 18 (24) months:

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 8 sts, 2 dc in next st] 10 times, dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn—110 (110) sts.
Row 4: Ch 3, [dc in next 12 sts, 2 dc in next st] 8 times, dc in last 5 sts, turn—118 (118) sts.
Row 5: Ch 3, dc in first st, [dc in next 20 sts, 2 dc in next st] 5 times, dc in last 12 sts, turn—124 (124) sts.

Shape Armholes

  1. All Sizes:
    • Round 1: Ch 3, dc in next 18 (14, 17, 24) sts, skip next 22 (24, 30, 33) sts for first armhole, dc in next 37 (39, 40, 42) sts, skip next 22 (24, 30, 33) sts for next armhole, dc in last 14 (20, 24, 19) sts; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3—70 (74, 82, 86) sts remain for skirt.
    • Note: The beginning and ending section of this round are different sizes, to allow for overlap at back for buttoning.
  2. Sizes 6 (24) months: Turn, before beginning skirt.
  3. Sizes 12 (18) months: Do not turn, before beginning skirt.

Skirt

Round 2 (Right Side): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1 here and throughout), dc in first st (beginning V-st made), skip next dc, *V-st in next dc, skip next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—35 (37, 41, 43) V-sts.
Round 3: Slip st in first ch-space, ch 4, dc in same ch-space (beginning V-st made), V-st in each ch-space around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch.

Repeat last round until skirt measures 3 (4, 5, 6)”.
Increase Round: Slip st in first ch-space, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2 here and throughout), dc in same ch-space (beginning lg-V-st made), lg-V-st in each ch- space around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch.
Repeat last round until skirt measures 7 (9, 10, 11)”. If additional flare is desired, switch to a hook one size larger for the last few rounds. Do not fasten off and do not turn.

Edging

Edging Round 1: Slip st in each st to first ch-space, (slip st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, hdc) in same ch-space, (hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc , hdc) in each ch-space around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-2.
Edging Round 2: Skip next 2 dc, (4 dc, picot, 3 dc) in next ch-space, *skip next 2 dc, slip st in next 2 hdc, (4 dc, picot, 3 dc) in next ch- space; repeat from * around to last hdc, slip st in last hdc; join with slip st in joining slip st. Fasten off.

Neck Edging

With Right Side facing and smaller hook, join yarn with slip st at beginning of neck edge (at back neck), work sc evenly spaced across neck edge, down back opening, and up other side of back opening, working a picot after every 3rd sc; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

Armhole Edging

With Right Side facing and smaller hook, join yarn with slip st anywhere in armhole edge
