Dew Drops Quilt Block Pattern

The Dew Drops Quilt Block, designed by Chelsi Stratton of Sherri & Chelsi, is a fresh and graceful addition to the Moda Blockheads 6 series. This elegant pattern blends half-square triangles (HSTs), quarter-square triangles (QSTs), and a central four-patch unit to create a design that flows naturally  just like drops of morning dew glistening under the sunlight.

Its soft geometric layout gives the block a sense of movement and calm, making it an excellent choice for modern and traditional quilters alike.

The Dew Drops Block comes in two variations  Block 5A and Block 5B  both finishing at 9 inches.
Each version uses slightly different fabric placements to create either a lighter or darker contrast. Whether you choose cool blues, delicate pastels, or warm earthy tones, this design brings out a gentle rhythm that makes any quilt shimmer with subtle beauty.

🪡 Piecing Instructions

Step 1 – Half-Square Triangles (HSTs):
On the wrong side of each 2½″ Fabric A/F square, draw a diagonal line.
Place right sides together with Fabric B/G and Fabric C/H squares.
Sew a scant ¼″ seam on both sides of the drawn line, then cut along the line to yield two HSTs.
Press toward the darker fabric and trim to 2″.
Make (8) A/F–B/G HSTs and (8) A/F–C/H HSTs.

Step 2 – Diagonal Post Units:
Draw a diagonal line on each 1¼″ Fabric E/J square.
Position two E/J squares on opposite corners of one D/I square, right sides together.
Stitch directly on the line, trim ¼″ from the seam, and press outward.
Repeat for the remaining corners, alternating seam direction to create nested seams.
Trim to 2″.
Make (4) units total.

Step 3 – Quarter-Square Triangles (QSTs):
Arrange one A/F triangle, two D/I triangles, and one E/J triangle as shown in the pattern.
Join triangles into pairs, pressing seams toward D/I fabrics.
Join pairs together to complete the QST unit.
Trim to 3½″.
Make (4).

Step 4 – Corner HST Units:
Lay out HSTs as shown in the diagram.
Join them into squares to form corner HST units.
Press seams open and trim to 3½″.
Make (4).

Step 5 – Center X Unit:
Arrange Diagonal Post units in alternating directions to create an “X” shape in the center.
Join and press seams open.
Trim to 3½″.
Make (1).

Step 6 – Assemble the Block:
Arrange the four corner HST units, four QSTs, and the central X unit according to the layout.
Sew rows together, then join the rows to complete the block.
Press all seams open and trim to 9½″ (to finish at 9″).
